the *obsidian falls* ep from seattles josef gaard sits at a very fascinating but incredibly complimentary space between traditional techno tendencies and freeform ambient composition and experimentation. each track seamlessly references each other providing a straightforward sense of cohesion while maintaining a constant and aggressively progressive motion. the ep will guide and gently coerce the listener into experiencing a somewhat altered perspective on sonic and musical expression. without much notice the listener will effortlessly travel from point a to point c without realizing they have ever touched on point b.

the extended project *inversion* follows his three track release *sleepwalkers* in 2013 and *timelines* in 2014. om unit was schooled via metalheadz. although he earned his stripes via hip hop as dj 2tall it was breakbeat-hardcore and jungle that shaped his attitude towards electronic music and the ferocious trail blazing of the metalheadz crew was an undoubted inspiration. thus it makes perfect sense that his take on this sound, his contribution to moving this sound forward comes via metalheadz. the sonic nature of the project is rooted in london, chicago and detroit- drums, subs and textures.

a truly essential piece of early detroit techno history here, octave ones original white label octivation ep from 1990 has long been a sought after and coveted slab of wax. this 5 track journey charts the burden brothers mood from sinister, spacey, acidic techno jams (sonic fusion) to deeper, more melancholic mid-tempo cuts (nicolette) and along the way manages to usher in a new wave of detroit techno sounds.

after an a-side debut on m_red ltd’s heady 10’’ series, shadowy outfit overall severity return with their first full outing for key vinyl. much like the slabs of steely sonic wares that have paved the way before it, “knowing the healing” presents three works of on-point dance floor material we’ve come to associate with the underground tastemaker. “explain pain” is the ep’s aggravated opener. a pounding kick and itchy percussion unfurls into a din of claps and noises, spliced with melodious peals and a low-slung sort of groove. “backfiring nerves” is one of those cool peak-time weapons: frantic yet subtle, deeply groovy and plied with much-loved vintage crashes. “parasympathetic” then concludes in the form of a chugging basement bomb awash with bleary acid tones, crystal hats and muted dissonant chimes. all in all, “knowing the healing” marks a powerful entry into the ring from these ones-to-watch newcomers.
